Escape Party
2005-04-17 9:41 a.m.

So I've decided to have an Escape Party October 13th and you're all invited. Well, maybe I shouldn't say that because the dirty old men that I seem to attract might take it a little too literally.

Anyway, I'm having a party. But party isn't exactly the right word I think. The only kind of party I've ever been to has included lots of booze and I'm not into all of that. I don't know the first thing about parties. Once people are here, what do I do with them? I guess if it's not raining October 13th then I can have a cookout. If it's raining we'll have to go somewhere else though because the inside of an Airstream is too small for more than a couple of people. How about Cafe Brazil for coffee and dessert?

The party gettogether thing is for me finding another job. I haven't found one yet, but that's the date I'm shooting for.

I've been reading "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was", which is a lovely book on planning your career with a lot of exercises about getting over the mental blocks that prevent you from doing what you want as well as helping you figure out what you want is. The book suggested that for people getting out of school that they try different jobs to learn as much as they can, then after six months if they don't like it to have a "Getting Out Party" (I liked Escape Party better) with their friends and it is supposed to be for leaving their job. If they haven't left then they have to tell their friends why they didn't and if they still want to quit, then they plan another party.

At first I thought this sounded like something that wouldn't be too great on a resume, all these jobs for just 6 months, but then I realized the type of job I'd be having, it doesn't really matter because there is a high turnover rate anyway. Of course, if I love the job I'd stay, but if I don't then there really is no reason to suffer. I want to enjoy life!

I'm going to try all these fun jobs that I've always thought about but never did: Floral delivery, limo driver, a friend suggested working on a cruise ship. I'm trying to think up some other fun stuff, so if you have any ideas please send me a note (e_lochinvar@yahoo.com). Also if you have any job leads ANYWHERE, let me know. I live in an Airstream and can and would love to relocate (not at all fond of the cold, but for just 6 months, I could stand it). I'll post the other suggestions that people send here. What a fun adventure! Who knows, I could chance upon the perfect job for me. At the very least, I'll get a lot of learning experience.

I'm currently working at Half Price Books and while it is cool, I really enjoy the people I work with, it's not enough money to stick with because I have no desire to be a manager at any job. It has kind of been grating on my nerves when they call for a "Half Price employee" over the intercomm. That leaving out of "Books" is a constant reminder that I'm making less than half of what I was making before.

I didn't like doing buys originally, but it's only the making the offer part of it that I don't like. I really like the excitement of opening a box and finding a bunch of vintage and nostalgia books. It's like a treasure hunt. I can very much see the appeal of my mom's antiquing.

I'm very much thinking of doing the same on eBay, but I need to find a good source of merchandise. I'm thinking about focusing on vintage and costume jewelry because it's small enough for me to work with in the spaceship and jewelry can be put on the scanner. Anything bigger and I'd need a digital camera which is not in the budget right now. >_< Fun stuff!

Tomorrow is my Saturday and I'm so happy! I'll be able to do some stuff around the ship and finally work on some commissions. I want to finish at least one of them. We'll see!

I love the smell of honeysuckle.
